Alternate models and new-to-us ideas consistently find space in the heartland. So, what is it about this region that encourages this welcoming of ingenuity and reimagining?


There’s no denying the do-it-yourself culture and attitude of the Midwest. 

In a March 2025 story about the Midwest’s almost century-old zine history, Liz Mason (formerly of Quimby’s Bookstore in Chicago) says: “The Midwest is that kind of scrappy DIY can-do.” 

It’s true. Alternate models and new-to-us ideas consistently find space in the heartland. But what is it about this region that encourages this welcoming of ingenuity and reimagining? 

Maybe there isn’t a straightforward response. It seems to be embedded in our histories. The idea of “alternate” is of this place because community building and culture making calls for it.
