About

The 2023 Bloomington Early Music Festival, Early Music Crossroads: Arabia, Iberia & Latin America, will explore deeply abiding and sometimes surprising musical connections across regions, religions, and cultures through many centuries of conquest, colonialism, and world migration. Our free, weeklong festival centers on music of the medieval period through the early nineteenth century, presenting local, regional, and world-class music ensembles in fourteen concerts (seven in-person and seven virtual), each paired with preconcert discussions between musicians and music specialists. A free educational workshop series designed for children and adults will run through festival week afternoons, investigating aspects of everyday life in the early music era, such as dance, food and drink, clothing and costumes, sword fighting (with foam swords!), printing and book making, and instrument building and acoustics.
