With an Arts Midwest GIG Fund grant, Accent Pontiac will contract with the Urban Art Orchestra, a 15-piece jazz/R&B/hip-hop collective led by De’Sean Jones, two-time Grammy nominee and native Detroiter. Members of the Urban Art Orchestra will lead two activities for the Pontiac community in partnership with Accent Pontiac. First, they will lead a multi-day workshop with approximately 30 Accent Pontiac student musicians focused on composing a new piece of music. At the culmination of the workshop, they will perform at an assembly for approximately 300 students at a public elementary school in Pontiac. The events will be scheduled in coordination with the availability of the Urban Art Orchestra, and are anticipated to take place in early 2024 (completed by June 30, 2024). This project primarily serves BIPOC youth in a lower income community, and the workshops and assembly will be free and open to the public.
