About

With the BIWOC Residency at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, we aim to address the underrepresentation of BIWOC artists in the museum’s collections. The residency will bring together a diverse group of BIWOC (Black, Indigenous, and Women of Color) artists from different parts of the country, representing various generations and art practices. The museum will facilitate meaningful activities during the symposium, including experimentation and connection-building. Notable artists Melissa R. Blount and Jennifer Graves will work with the museum to build an engaging hands-on letterpress printing workshop and demonstrations for the community to participate in. We will display the finished works in the museum gallery. The artists will utilize the Hamilton museum’s collections of wood type to create new art works, while also sharing their creative process. The grant will allow us to cover artists fees, allocated staff salaries, travel expenses, accommodation, and provide necessary art materials and printing equipment.

The framework for thinking about place and identity holistically builds on Yang’s memoir’s structure, and the ways our place’s geology and topography affects ethology.
