About

Kathak is the 2,000-year-old classical dance of North India. Kathak means “story” in Sanskrit & originated as a way to convey epic tales of Hindu scripture. Over two millennia, Kathak dance has evolved into a blend of Indo-Persian & Hindu-Islamic cultures, featuring complex rhythms, intricate footwork, graceful movements, pirouettes & gestural storytelling.

Master Kathak artist, Saswati Sen, trained in India where she received the National Scholarship in Performing Arts & graduated to become the prime disciple of the legendary Pt. Birju Maharaj. Ms. Sen has trained students around the world in the style of her guru which incorporates the lyrical grace & rhythmic virtuosity of Kathak.

During her time in MN, Ms. Sen will conduct a series of master classes & lecture/demonstrations for BIPOC youth & adults in at least one school in the Twin Cities. Her work will include at least one performance or exhibition at KDT’s studio in St. Louis Park, MN, that is open to the general public.
