About

The McConnell Arts Center will feature local artist April Sunami in the exhibition “I Am Because You Are” January 11–March 13, 2024. Sunami’s mixed-media artwork features women of color as strong, spiritual subjects and discusses the topics of race, identity, and representation. The show is presented in collaboration with members of Creative Women of Color. CWOC is “a collective of African American women artists whose mission is to educate, encourage, inspire, and provide a creative connection with the community for the purpose of advancing the arts.” The exhibition is free and open to the public for its full duration, including an opening reception on January 11, 2024.
An artist panel on the topic of community will be hosted by Sunami and feature Janet George, Gaye Reissland, and Wendy Kendrick (current and former members of CWOC). Sunami will also lead a guided gallery tour and teach a mixed-media workshop. All programming will be free and open to the public.
