Mitchell Street Arts (MiSA)

Milwaukee, WI

GIG Fund

FY2024

About

The Southside of Milwaukee has undergone major cultural changes over the past century. Originally the landing point for many eastern Europeans in the city, the Southside is now home to many hispanic and middle eastern immigrants. While the community has evolved, the neighborhood is covered with symbols for who came before; the houses are the same. In collaboration with Urban Anthropology Inc, we will determine homes on the Southside that hold unique cultural stories (utilizing the Milwaukee County Historical Society Database) and architectural details. We will then invite community members to learn both the art of building miniatures and the history of our evolving neighborhood. There will be a minimum of two miniature building classes, and three workshops addressing the cultural evolution of the Southside.

The framework for thinking about place and identity holistically builds on Yang’s memoir’s structure, and the ways our place’s geology and topography affects ethology.
