The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has announced grants totaling $4,730,500 to organizations in the Midwest.
Recipients include 216 organizations and individuals from Arts Midwest’s region, recommended in the categories of Grants for Arts Projects, Challenge America, Research Grants in the Arts, and Research Labs.
Also included in this announcement are grants to individuals for Literature Fellowships, which include Creative Writing Fellowships in prose and fellowships to support translation projects.

We are inspired by these funded projects and grateful to the artists and arts leaders who ensure that urban and rural communities in the region have access to strong, creative experiences.”
Examples of funded Midwestern projects include:
- A Research Grants in the Arts award to Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) of $85,000 to support a clinical research study investigating the impact of a music-based rehabilitation intervention on cognition and auditory processing in concussed youth.
- A Challenge America award to Upijata Arts Company (Allen, SD) of $10,000 to support a series of arts programs in the Pine Ridge Reservation.
- A Literature Fellowships: Creative Writing award to Allison Pitinii Davis (Wheeling, OH), of $50,000 to enable time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement.
- A Grants for Arts Projects – Dance award to Ko-Thi Dance Company (Milwaukee, WI) of $30,000 to support the creation and presentation of new dance works and community engagement activities directed by founder and African dance scholar Ferne Yangyeitie Caulker.
- A local arts agencies subgranting award to Arrowhead Regional Arts Council (Duluth, MN) of $60,000 to support the expansion of competitive grant programs for arts organizations and individual artists. The Art Project Grant program will support arts activities presented by small organizations with a focus on applicants from rural areas. The Individual Artist Project Grant program will provide a stipend for artists to create, perform, or exhibit work.
