Cal Shakes will produce Marcus Gardley’s Play On adaptation of KING LEAR in 2022. Key artists include the playwright, co-director Eric Ting, co-director Dawn Monique Williams, and resident dramaturg Philippa Kelly, who consulted on the adaptation. Marcus?s LEAR, set in San Francisco’s Fillmore District of the ?60?s, seeks to reclaim the living power of Shakespeare’s poetry and connect it to the Black American experience. Residencies and/or student matinees will engage 1,350-1,500 students.
