Alash Ensemble is a musical group from the Republic of Tuva; part of the Russian Republic, who in addition to being acclaimed musicians, are award-winning practitioners of the art of throat singing. Renowned around the world, in the U. S. they have performed in venues as small as local schools and libraries, to Carnegie Hall, SXSW, and the Library of Congress; and collaborated with artists as diverse as Bela Fleck, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Shodekeh. We have planned a free afternoon workshop, showcasing the culture, language, and geography of the Republic of Tuva, presented by Sean Quirk, long-time band manager, and complemented by examples of music from the group. In the evening we plan a 2-hour ticketed concert performance. The entirety of the grant will be used to pay the band; the remainder of expenses – venue for the events, sound system & technician, advertising, lodging and food for the band, and staff support will be the matching contribution from Folklore Village, and others.
