About

“Transforming Spaces, Empowering Artists,” aims to rejuvenate the interior and exterior spaces of the house on our campus, including the gallery, four artist studio spaces. We’re reimagining these rooms and adding culturally inspired artwork. This house is a literal and figurative home for our local Latino artists. Our goal is to infuse culturally relevant art, drawing inspiration from various Latin American countries’ styles, textures, and techniques, creating a vibrant, welcoming, and functional environment. This ambitious project seeks to transform our creative house into a dynamic creative space, empowering artists and engaging the community. This project would select a lead artist that will include other Latino artists in workshops that will spark artistic expression and creativity that will later culminate in a networking event for artists and the community at large where the featured artists can showcase and discuss their works and processes.

    PLMVKC celebrates Charles Yu’s Interior: Chinatown with book discussions and on our “What Are You Reading?” podcast; a Teen Makerspace craft series; prose, poetry, and screenwriting workshops with Ira Sukrungruang, Cindy Ok, Jon Tazewell and Hao Zhou; dance, foodways and martial arts demos and more! PLMVKC will host an author visit at Woodward Opera House, with Lion Dancers and a community meal.

    The Fitz Center for Leadership in Community at the University of Dayton, in collaboration with Dayton Metro Library, Daybreak Dayton, the African American Visual Artists Guild, and the Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site, will offer assorted public programming in conjunction with a community-wide reading of Yaa Gyasi’s book, “Homegoing,” from September 18, 2024, through May 18, 2025.
