This grant seeks support for a single concert or as part of a series of four both with cultural focus and educational components. We aim to host The Ark Band from Ohio for a reggae performance June 2024, as part of our Jamaican Celebration, open to all. Our target audience is the roughly 2,000 Jamaican seasonal workers on the island. Our efforts to better serve this demographic began with a 2021 seasonal employee survey, followed by the 2022 Jamaican Employee Celebration (NEA Challenge America grant), & continued with a 2023 MI Humanities grant for personal interviews with local Jamaican leaders. These activities have allowed Jamaicans to share their culture with the predominantly white island population, fostering understanding & harmony across demographics. Geographically, Mackinac Island is a unique, car-free historical rural venue with summer resident population spikes from 500 to 10,000, serving nearly 1 million annual visitors each summer.
