Despite the fact that women account for half of the world’s population (49.7% in 2022, per the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs), according to award-winning historian and author Dr. Bethany Hughes, “Women only occupy around 0.5% of recorded history. The stories of women have been written out of history rather than written in.” For organizations like the South Dakota Historical Society and Foundation, it’s our job to fill in the gaps in women’s history. This project strives to do that by providing illustrated women’s history card decks to 4th grade classrooms throughout the state of South Dakota, making women’s history tangible, fun and accessible to future generations in a creative and interesting way.
