Residents of Marathon County are familiar with the music of the Hmong and of North India from various events. However, both musical traditions are not well understood. Each concert in this series will be accompanied by a lecture which will make the music more accessible by explaining its underlying structure. For Hmong music, that will be relationship between music and language, and for North Indian classical music it will be relationship between underlying musical structure and performance. Support for this series from the Hmong American Center and the Indian Society of Central Wisconsin is very strong. Each performer will also provide a high school workshop which will serve a diverse audience of students.
Fourteen percent of Wasau’s population is from Southeast Asia and is home the Hmong museum of culture “From Laos to America” which holds a collection of traditional materials unsurpassed in the world.
