In the spring and fall, WIR offers weekly creative writing workshops. There are 3 workshop categories. “Creative Spark” workshops are free to the detention centers and include 5 sessions/season. “Wise Words” workshops are $90 and include 8 sessions/season. “Authors Ablaze” workshops are $65 and include 11 sessions/season. In addition to the extended workshop schedules, the fee-for-service models offer opportunities for special guest authors and bonus experiences. The structure of all the workshops aligns with the funding criteria for this grant. We engage Ohio based literary artists with excellent credentials to teach. These funds will be used to compensate the artists. By their nature, the workshops are educational. Crucial to its success is the positive interaction between the teaching artists, the student volunteers, and the residents. There will be public events showcasing the works produced. And the population served, youth in detention, are an extremely underserved demographic.
